The students are set to embark upon the 625-page Moby Dick, just as we, the audience settle in for an 87-minute documentary. Her speech functions more like a pep talk for both her students and us, the audience. The film opens with a lecture by teacher Vicki Hebert to her high school English class. We learn early on in the film's prologue that we can't take too much for granted. But as you'll learn throughout the film - much like reading Moby Dick - finding one's way through life is a singular endeavor, a journey shaped by the paths we choose to take. If it seems like a dizzying tangle of narrative paths, it is. As an adult, Mark has found his way to the novel, which has had an unexpectedly significant impact on his life. Much like the personal journey one takes in the undertaking of Herman Melville's 1851 tome Moby Dick, it's up to us, the viewers, to navigate our own meaning from within this singular, expansive film.īut first, how might I chart the film's journey? Like an avalanche, there may be apparent chaos and randomness in this film yet there is actual subjacent order and sense. Much in the same manner in which Melville develops his novel, Blumberg shares with us his journey, or should we say, his personal quest for intellectual redemption. ![]() In summary, this film will probably be enjoyed by every true Moby Dick aficionado out there ~ it carries bits of love and darkness, out of the past and into the future. ![]() Through his careful craft, these angles help form a pattern that ultimately makes sense from a distance, not unlike an old New England quilt. In this case, Mr Blumberg approaches artfully multiple angles on the matter of the challenges confronted by students in appreciating the Act of Reading, of reading Moby Dick in particular, being such an obscure and often unfriendly literary work. In the wise words of Donald Barthelme, "Art is not difficult because it wishes to be difficult, but because it wishes to be Art.". Mark Blumberg does a good job in delivering his story by allowing the plot develop at its own natural pace with mature and sincere attention to the craft, weaving diverse elements (classrooms, his high school teacher, family and strangers) and a search for meaning with the common thread of Herman Melville and his Great American novel, "Moby Dick or, The Whale" (1851).
